The 2014 PokerListings Battle of Malta is scheduled to kick off on Nov. 6 and by the time the smoke clears it will likely be the biggest tournament ever held in the country.

Thanks to a €500,000-guaranteed prizepool nearly 1,000 players are expected to make the trek to Malta for the €550 buy-in tournament.

Andreas Hoivold, Leo Margets, Luca Pagano and Paul Jackson are among the notable poker pros confirmed to play. Maria Ho will be this year’s host.

“With a world-class location, full media coverage and a huge schedule of side events and parties the Battle of Malta gives recreational players a major tournament experience at a buy-in that fits their bankroll,” explained Ho in a new promo video for the event.

Leo Margets will play this year's Battle of Malta

Taking place from Nov. 6-9, 2014, the Battle of Malta will feature four official events with Pot-Limit Omaha on the schedule for the first time ever.

888poker pro Sofia Lovgren took part in the 2013 Battle of Malta and mentioned it was one of her highlights of the year.

“Battle of Malta was great last year,” she said. “It was really fun to go there and play. I think it will be even more fun this year.”

Andreas Hoivold added that he really liked the experience surrounding the tournament.

“The poker was fun but everything else was a LOT of fun,” he said.

The entire festival will take place at the Portomaso Casino and Hilton in picturesque St. Julian in Malta. There will be plenty going on beyond just poker with several VIP parties.

Devilfish, Panka, Shorr Out Front as PL Award Voting Winds Down

$

Just two weeks remain in the public voting for the PokerListings 2014 Spirit of Poker awards and favorites have begun to emerge.

All told 24 players are still in the running for one of our three awards to be handed out during the Battle of Malta in November.

This is the 2nd year of the PokerListings Spirit of Poker awards which highlight players in the poker community who inspire in more ways than just big results.

By the volume of voting so far we can tell the idea is hitting home with poker fans.

For the full list of nominees for this year's awards and the reasoning behind each player's nomination, head to the Spirit of Poker Awards page and be sure to cast your vote before August 31.

Leaders Emerge Down Homestretch

With voting open over the summer several thousand readers have already taken part in the election process.

When voting closes on August 31 the top three finalists in each award category will make the shortlist to be considered by our PokerListings voting panel, from which three winners will emerge. Here's how the voting stands:

Shannon Shorr
Tackling Kilimanjaro just the latest inspiring feat for Shannon Shorr.

1) Shorr, Lew Neck-and-Neck

In our signature award category, Most Inspiring Player, three very prominent names have risen to the top of the counts.

Our nominees in this category are a true collection of some of the most inspiring people in today’s global poker community so it's only fitting the results at this point are the closest.

Alabama's Shannon Shorr leads the MIP voting right with PokerStars Team Online pro Randy "nanonoko" Lew a close second. German high-stakes pro/effective altruist Philipp Gruissem sits third.

Consistency, Multipicity, Generosity

Three inspiring players, indeed, if you think of what they stand for. Shorr is an amazing example of consistency.

Having travelled the global circuit for more than a decade he's one of the few players who keeps winning every year without the help of a full-time sponsor.

Apart from the challenges in poker he's also a guy who likes to challenge himself. Only recently he climbed Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro and the way he thinks and writes about poker in his blog is an inspiration to every player.

Nanonoko is a living legend in the world of multi-tabling and his exploits have put him into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Lew loves to play and loves to share with his fans. He’s very active on social media which gives millions of players the chance to gain from his experience. At this stage, Lew (33%) trails Shorr (36%) by just 3% of the votes.

In third is Philipp Gruissem. The German high roller stands like no one else for high buy-ins and a strong sense for charity.

With his commitment to Effective Altruism and as a co-founder of Raising for Effective Giving, he has kicked off a movement where poker players take responsibility not only for themselves but also for society as a whole.

David Ulliott
Maturing Devilfish man of the people.

Head to the “Most Inspiring Players” page to cast your vote.

Last year’s winner: Naoya Kihara, Japan’s only WSOP bracelet winner and flagbearer of poker in the Far East.

2) Devilfish, Thor and Tilly Pull Ahead

In our Living Legend category we recognize the men and women who were into poker before hoodies were invented, when you preferred to sit with your back against the wall and when wearing sunglasses meant you actually were a bad guy - you weren't just trying to look like one.

Now think of Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott. You kind of have to. The life story of the 60-year-old from Kingston-upon-Hull is so wild it couldn’t have been invented better by a screenwriter. If it is ever used for a movie, the director will probably be Guy Ritchie.

A softer, gentler Devilfish has taken over at the tables lately but the same vicious wit that got him here shows up from time to time too.

In second place at the moment: Thor Hansen. People tend to overuse superlatives but the Viking from Norway is, truly, a living legend.

He battled the live tables in Las Vegas for several decades and when cancer tried to get the better of him he fought back and is still there. An idol if there’s ever been one.

Jennifer Tilly is third in the voting. The actress-turned-poker-pro proved a long time ago that she's not a fluke at the poker table.

With her gregarious personality, steady results and infectious enthusiasm caught by all around her her impact on the game of poker can't be overstated.

Go to the “Living legends page” to cast your vote.

Last year’s winner: Pierre Neuville, the “Serial Qualifier” from Belgium.

3) Panka Leads Scandis

There are players who’ve "made" it, and there are players who will make it. Some are already on the way.

Sofia Lovgren
Can Sofia narrow the gap on Panka?

For now voters are favoring Poland's Dominik Panka to be the next big star in poker. Panka appeared on the poker stage over the past year with two big bangs -- winning the PCA main event and the EPT Deauville high roller event in close succession.

Sofia Lövgren from Sweden is nominated a second time in a row for the PokerListings Awards. She has recently moved to a new sponsor, 888poker, and her presence in the poker community is always growing with 4,400 friends on Facebook and almost 4,000 followers on Twitter.

She's currently holding down second place in the Rising Star voting.

On her heels is fellow Scandinavian Yngve Steen from Norway. Last year he won the WCOOP leaderboard and he 's already left his mark in several live tournaments. It's only a question of time until he takes down his first major title.

Go to the “Rising Stars” page to cast your vote.

Last year’s winner: Luca Moschitta from Italy, who has recently moved to Malta to continue his poker career.

Voting Ends August 31!

Get your vote in on each of the Spirit of Poker Award pages to have your voice heard and give credit to the players who you think deserve recognition.

Voting closes at 11.59 PM on August 31st.

The 2014 PokerListings Spirit of Poker Awards ceremony will take place during the Battle of Malta 2014, November 6-9.

Shorr, Hansen and Panka Scoop 2014 Spirit of Poker Awards

$
0
0

It's official: Shannon Shorr, Thor Hansen and Dominik Panka have won the 2014 PokerListings Spirit of Poker Awards.

After 2.5 months of public voting and a week of deliberation by the PokerListings panel the well-respected trio rose to the top of their respective categories to claim the 2014 SOPAs.

Shorr takes home the headline award - Most Inspiring Player. His exceptional year included two WSOPE final tables, a runner-up finish at the WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open and a monumental personal accomplishment in climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Hansen claimed the Living Legend Award and there couldn't be anyone more fitting to earn said title than the Godfather of Norwegian poker.

After battling terminal cancer for the past two years Hansen has found solace and inspiration in the game of poker and still somehow managed to bring his best to the tables, both online and live.

Panka, winner of the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure main event and already Poland's all-time leading money winner, claimed the Rising Star Award.

The 2014 Spirit of Poker awards will be handed out in a live ceremony at the Battle of Malta in November. All award winners will be contacted shortly with full details about exclusive packages to attend the event.

Most Inspiring Player: Shannon Shorr

Shannon Shorr2
Made the most out of poker's opportunities.

As we said in our original nominations the 29-year-old Shorr has literally grown up on the poker circuit.

One of the original "online kids," Shorr broke through on the live scene overseas in 2006 before he even turned 21 with a 4th-place finish at the Aussie Millions.

His first summer in Vegas he chopped the Bellagio Cup main event and it's been a steady string of cashes since.

Despite still somehow missing a WSOP bracelet Shorr has lived a poker life to the fullest. He's criss-crossed the globe, expanded his horizons and when life-altering opportunities have presented themselves, like summitting Mt. Kilimanjaro this summer, he's taken them.

It hasn't all been easy, though, and as he's written about in his blog the ups and downs of poker have inspired him to not take anything for granted and to make the absolute most of life on the road.

At the felt Shorr has embodied consistency so much over the years he even outranked Phil Ivey on the GPI's Top 9 Players of the Decade list, coming in at #7.

In the final panel deliberation Shorr edged out PokerStars Team online pro Randy "nanonoko" Lew and late contender Mayu Roca in the final voting. Check the full list of nominees here.

Living Legend: Thor Hansen

Every one of the eight nominees in our Living Legend category embody a long and inspiring life in poker but it's no surprise Hansen was the name at the top of the ballots in the end.

In January 2012 Hansen was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Doctors told him the absolute maximum life expectancy in a case like his was two years. He's been in and out of debilitating chemotherapy since.

Thor Hansen
Impossible not to revere Thor.

Still, going on close to three years later, Hansen is still finding his way to the tables and giving his opponents all they can handle. He's even snuck in a final table or two.

As he told us less than a month ago at EPT Barcelona, "I know I am very, very sick. But I’m a strong guy, I can take a lot. I’m not even supposed to be alive anymore, but here I am playing the main event.”

Twice nominated for the Poker Hall of Fame but not inducted, PokerListings is thrilled to annoint Hansen with a Spirit of Poker Award that truly captures the magnitude of his accomplishments - Living Legend.

Also finishing in the top 3 of fan balloting were Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott and the amazing Jennifer Tilly. See the full list of nominees here.

Rising Star: Dominik Panka

If you followed the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure main event at all you'll also understand why Dominik Panka was the runaway winner of our Rising Star award for 2014.

Despite a stacked nominee list that included the much-adored Sofia Lövgren, Norwegian crusher Yngve Steen and WSOPE main event winner Adrian Mateos, Panka's cool, calm and inspiring play stuck with voters from Day 1.

dominikpanka
Calm, cool, #1 at 23

While winning one of the signature events of the poker year for $1.4m was impressive his follow-up win at the EPT Deauville High Roller less than a month later sealed him as a player people couldn't take their attention off.

Just 23 and already Poland's all-time live tournament money leader, Panka obviously has a long and successful career in poker available to him if he chooses.

But, like all of our SOPA nominees, poker's still just one facet of a well-rounded life that sees him collect as much satisfaction off the felt as on.

Panka defeated fellow finalists Lövgren and Steen to earn the title; see the full list of Rising Star nominees here.

Pyrotechnician, Poker Fan Lilly DeFeu Wins BOM 2014 Photo Contest

$

Jesus couldn't defeat her. Batman couldn't defeat her.

A card-playing Basset Hound couldn't defeat her. Not even a dour Angela Merkel could.

In the end only one winner could emerge from our 20 finalists in the BOM 2014 photo competition and that is Lilly DeFeu, a pyrotechnician and poker fan from Berlin.

DeFeu was the ony entrant to produce an animated GIF and, incorporating her pyrotechnic background and a little help from a photographer, she won over the voters with her winning entry below:

BOMJUHU

"When I heard first about the Battle of Malta tournament," DeFeu says, "I was super excited and was looking for ways to be part of it.

"Malta combines a few things I am really passionate about: Great climate and history, poker and pyrotechnics! Malta has a rich firework tradition and I always wanted to visit.

"I am a pyro technician and fire performer myself, and I do love playing poker. A friend told me about the picture competition and I was immediately sold"

BOM Batman was the runner-up in the votes. See the full list of finalists here.

Idea Came Together Considering Women in Poker

Understanding the context of being a woman in poker, DeFeu says she took that into consideration for her idea:

Battle of Malta
DeFeu: Playing for more than just herself.

"It took me a while to come up with a concept. One of the first suggestions I got from friends I consulted was: Get the logo body painted on you!

"After some thought I decided not to follow through with that. I am well aware about the picture of women in modern poker so I wanted to portray myself in a less sexualised position.

"So, fire it was. I phoned up my friend, Jascha Eidam, who is a vivid cosplay photographer if he would like to help to get me to Malta. I explained something about pirates, special effects and fire and he was sold on the spot"

"We met a couple of days later and had a great shoot together, much to the amazement of a couple of Berlin tourists, who witnessed the whole thing."

DeFeu won't just be playing for herself in the BOM Main Event either. Her photographer also stands to make a nice bit of cash if she goes deep.

"So, unfortunately I am not the richest person, so instead of money I promised my photographer 10% if I should win the picture competition and cash in the tournament.

"So here I am now, very happy to get the opportunity to visit Malta and play the Battle of Malta!"

DeFeu's winning package for the Battle of Malta includes:

Four nights at the 5-Star Hilton Malta Buy-in to the Battle of Malta Main Event Daily breakfast and buffet Tickets to both BOM VIP parties

Jungleman Plots Return to Battle of Malta, Sets Sights on High Roller

$

Add one more name to the list of big-time pros you can expect to see at the 2014 Battle of Malta: Dan "Jungleman12" Cates.

One of the best heads-up No-Limit Hold’em players in the world Cates has attended both editions of the Battle of Malta so far and says he plans to be there again.

This time, Cates added, his eyes will also be on a new addition to the Battle of Malta schedule: the €4,180 Grandmaster High Roller event.

An exciting new twist to the BOM schedule inspired by demand from players last year the High Roller suits the budget of some of the big-name pros set to attend BOM in 2014.

Already confirmed stars include PokerStars pros Leo Margets and Luca Pagano, Spirit of Poker Award winner Dominik Panka, Paul Jackson and more.

Still No Closure on durrrr Challenge

Tom Dwan
Hard man to pin down.

As one of the truly elite poker players in the world just the presence of Cates at the tables makes the atmosphere at BOM special for the casual poker fan.

Cates is one of only three people to win over $10m online on Full Tilt Poker, putting him in elite company alongside Phil Ivey and Patrik Antonius.

Among his many televised appearances are the made-for-TV NBC Heads-Up Championship, the PartyPoker Premier League and the €100k Super High Roller at the EPT Grand Final in April where he was the runner-up and earned $1.7m.

Beyond the first two editions of the Battle of Malta one other infamous poker event you might recognize Cates from is the still-to-be completed durrrr Challenge.

Agreed to and begun way back in 2010 Cates raced out to a huge lead and looked to be a lock for a $1.5m+ payday before Black Friday and durrrr's reticence to continue got in the way.

The Challenge briefly resumed last year but has been on hiatus since - although an agreement has been in place for Cates to be paid $40,000 per month if durrrr doesn’t meet a required number of hands.

Five Events Make for Full Poker Festival

The Grandmaster High Roller is one of three new events added to the Battle of Malta festival in 2014.

A €165 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament and a €300 Deepstack No-Limit Turbo are the others. Rounding out the full BOM 2014 schedule is the €550 buy-in Main Event and the returning Siege of Malta Second Chance event, this time with an increased €200 buy-in.

Battle of Malta
Expanded lineup brings an even bigger festival feel.

Add in the VIP parties and casual, party-like atmosphere the Battle of Malta is easily one of the most fun, highest-value events in Europe for low- to mid-stakes poker players.

Given the size of the fields, with over 1,000 players expected for the €500,000 guaranteed Main Event, there’s also plenty of incentive for big-time pros like Cates to come out.

A fantastic group of professionals has already committed to attending BOM including PokerStars pros Margets and Pagano, 2014 PCA Main Event champ Panka, Andreas Hoivold, Jesper Hougaard, Sofia Lövgren and, of course, host Maria Ho.

More details on all the Battle of Malta festivities including the schedule, calendar and tournament structures can be found here. Watch a couple video clips of Cates at the Battle of Malta below.

BOM Champ Proust: "It Helped Me Prove to Myself I Can Play Well"

They say that winners have “something more."

For France's Nicolas Proust, winner of the 2015 Battle of Malta main event, that “something more” could arguably be a half-dozen things.

He’s hard-working, hyper competitive and humble. He can control his emotions, think lucidly and keep the proper frame of mind under stress.

A former tennis coach who took some time to focus on poker last year his "somethings" paid off huge in Malta with a 110,000 payday and the prestigious BOM main event trophy.

Now with the bankroll to give poker another serious go in 2016 we caught up with Nicolas late last year to find out if the 2015 BOM was as satisfying for him as it looked.

PokerListings: First of all, congratulations again Nicolas. What motivated you to take part in the Battle of Malta?

Nicolas Proust: I came for the EPT festival but I have some friends who live here and who kept talking to me about the Battle of Malta.

I really wanted to play that tournament, especially since I was told that the game wasn’t too “crazy." A €500 buy-in also seemed ideal.

I was lucky enough to qualify for some EPT events and I realized that the buy-in has a massive influence on the way you play, regarding the costs and winning thresholds.

Nicolas Proust 3598

PL: What did you think of the tournament?

NP: I had a great time.

It’s a very friendly tournament, everyone is having a laugh around the table.

Plus I know a lot of people here, so I just had a good time.

PL: What did you enjoy the most compared to other tournaments?

NP: First of all, just being in Malta. I feel great and it’s very important. The prize pool, too. It was huge compared to the buy-in and the structure was interesting.

Nicolas Proust2

Everyone was here to play. You can do things you wouldn’t necessarily be able to do in other tournaments.

Here, there’s just enough pressure to play well. It’s the perfect tournament to step up your game.

PL: You’re 29 and you used to be a tennis coach. Can you tell us a bit more about your background?

NP: In high school all I wanted to do was IT. After that, I went to university to study IT, up to a Master’s degree. And then I just dropped everything.

I couldn’t picture myself spending my life in front of a computer. Which is quite ironic when you think about it (laughs). Let’s say I didn’t want to spend my life in an office.

So I got my coaching degree to go back to my sport - I was playing tennis then. I wanted to play at a high level but I started too late. I was never good enough for that and I injured myself, so I had to stop playing.

I had opened a new section in a club where I was in charge of preparing players for tournaments, on top of being responsible for the more amateur section. I did that for 5 or 6 years.

Then I stopped working for a year. I wanted to take a sabbatical and travel, see the world and learn English in Australia. I’d even found a job there, giving classes. But that fell through and I stayed here.

Unfortunately the season had already started and I couldn’t find a club. I had nothing left but poker (laughs). It didn’t go great at first.

I wasn’t doing well and I didn’t particularly want to make a living playing poker. I wasn’t ready mentally to play poker full time.

PL: Was it the money that convinced you?

NP: No, I’ve always been aware that poker was absolutely not “easy money” and that it was difficult to handle your money to play and to live.

But there are definitely good sides: freedom - that’s priceless. Just being able to go anywhere at any time, that’s something I couldn’t do when I had a boss.

Nicolas Proust 3048

But it’s not all fun; it can get quite lonely for example. I didn’t want to act like a superhero if I couldn’t handle it.

I’ve only been playing for 3 or 4 years and the few results I’d had since then could have been just a good run.

PL: What pushed you to say “I’m going in” instead of “I fold?"

NP: Two months ago I was ready to drop everything, actually. Quit poker and find a job. I had applied here and there, to work in gaming companies.

But after that I had to make a choice. I still hadn’t found a job but I’d spent a lot of time on my computer, learning. For my ego I told myself I just couldn’t quit like that.

I had already made that mistake once, with tennis. And from then on it started going better and better online. Now I’ve won the Battle of Malta!

PL: How did you discover poker?

NP: With friends, on a tennis tour. We had a poker set, like everyone. It was back when the World Poker Tour was getting big.

I remember that everyone had their own rules, like a kids’ game (laughs). Online poker came a few years later, one night as I was bored (laughs).

I had a problem: I quickly got quite a lot of money ... playing badly. The fields were very weak. I played games I don’t even play now, like NL1000 cash games. Of course I ended up losing it all.

I started playing seriously when a colleague of mine showed me what Sharkscope was. That’s when I realized that I was losing 2 or 3k, which was huge at the time.

Bertrand
Merci, ElkY.

There was no way I was going to lose so much in a card game.

PL: So after that, you did some research?

NP: I bought two books. One that got me a lot of money: Kill ElkY 1 (Kill Everyone). It’s amazing for tournament basics. Then I bought the next two volumes, and some other books.

PL: What’s your favorite game?

NP: Tournaments. I get bored very quickly with cash games. It’s mostly about waiting for the fish and squeezing them out.

That’s not really my thing. I’m very competitive. Give me a bunch of players and may the best one win. It’s more fun, and in my opinion healthier.

Cash games are more interesting in the higher limits. Players have a different vision, there isn’t any fish. I would love to go up against these great players but I don’t have the money to.

PL: We imagine that being competitive, which you probably picked up playing tennis, helps you a lot with poker.

NP: Definitely. Poker and tennis tournaments have a lot in common. Inflection points exist in tennis tournaments as well as poker tournaments, for example when it’s 4 all or 4-3 or during a tie breaker.

At some points during the match your game, your state of mind, must change. It’s the same in poker. You’ll need to be more aggressive, to make slightly better decisions, to take risks. Just to show you’re present.

These situations exist in poker; they just take another form.

Chris Moorman
Lots to learn from Moorman.

PL: Mentally as well?

NP: That’s an important aspect too. Poker is a solitary sport, like tennis. When you lose you’re alone, even if your friends are around to support you. You have to know how to keep yourself in check.

PL: Who are your role models in poker and tennis, these players who particularly inspire you?

NP: Marat Safin was my idol. He wasn’t a perfect player because he was a bit crazy, but his game was beautiful. I also really liked Gustavo Kuerten, for his personality as much as his game.

I also liked combative players like Agassi. Not so much for his game but because he was a model of perseverance, hard work and giving everything he’s got - like Nadal now. That’s the best spirit you can have when you’re playing sports.

Some poker players impress me too. I haven’t watched that many games on TV but online there are some monsters like Romain “neuville25” Baer or Chris Moorman.

Moorman is the kind of guy I’d like to spend one hour with just so that he could tell me his life story.

PL: Let’s talk a bit more about the tournament. What struck me is that you seemed very calm and collected throughout the tournament, even when you were one card away from busting. Always totally cool, no sign of stress.

proustFT3

NP: I felt it too, and it was strange. I’ve talked about it with my friends too, and they hadn’t really noticed.

When I called with A5 and Van Ravenswoud showed aces, in my head I knew I’d lost but I didn’t even get up.

I only had 2 possible backdoors but I didn’t think for one second that my tournament was over (laughs).

Maybe I was too focused, and not so clear-headed. Maybe I was just too sure of myself.

Already the day before the tournament started I had decided it was mine. It’s all very subjective but that was my frame of mind. I came to win.

It’s something I’ve learned when I played tennis: always have a goal higher than your actual goal, because it’s really hard to reach your goal.

I was 9th out of 10 at the start of the final table anyway, so I had nothing to lose.

Nicolas Proust 3481
No flinching.

PL: But you didn’t even seem that excited.

NP: First of all, I didn’t want to make the player feel bad, beating his aces with 9 players left. Out of respect for him. And I really wanted to stay focused on the tournament.

PL: Is that also a matter of respect or are you more of an introvert?

NP: It’s a bit of both. Most of the time I’m an introvert.

And it wasn’t a good time to burst out, like the chip leader Uri Gilboa who ended up losing everything because he was always caught up in the emotion. You can’t play like that.

It’s the same in tennis; sometimes you have to keep the emotion buried inside and focus on what you have to do. Save it for later.

PL: So you never had any doubt at any point?

NP: Not really, except for the first 30 minutes when I wasn’t feeling that great. I just needed some time to get used to the table, to get into the tournament.

I’m happy that I dared to do things I wouldn’t have dared to do in other tournaments. I almost played my online A-game, that’s really good.

The Battle of Malta helped me prove to myself that I can play well, even live.

PL: We imagine that it also helped you to have so much support.

proustchamp3
More fun to share.

NP: Totally. I received so many messages! My friends, my family, my grinder buddies...

I didn’t read them during the tournament because I really wanted to stay focused and my phone and my tablet were going off every 5 seconds (smiles).

But when I got home I saw that I had hundreds of missed calls, notifications, texts... It was insane.

I think that’s the best thing about all this. All these messages, everything you shared with the people at the rail, especially at the end. I think that’s what I’ll remember about this tournament.

That’s what you play for. It’s also what I played for in tennis. Playing the big games, having people there to support you and live the game with you.

If you can get that at a poker tournament, it means that poker can bring emotions and will always be popular, just like any other sport.

PL: Is there any special preparation for a tournament with more than 1,000 players?

Nicolas Proust
Frame of mind essential.

NP: I didn’t do any particular preparation but I knew exactly in what frame of mind I would play it. I knew I had to get a lot of chips really quickly so I could go through a lot of tables as easily as possible and go deep.

I was careful to sleep well, to get up early enough before the tournament so I was well awake, and to not go to bed too late.

I’d already done that before and it makes a big difference. Because when you’re really focused all day, you’re drained at the end of the day. And if you haven’t slept well or aren’t well-prepared, it’s easy to make a silly mistake and lose it all.

PL: We can feel you’re a perfectionist.

NP: That’s also something I learned playing tennis, with competition: the deeper you want to go, the more attention you have to pay to details.

It’s the only thing that differentiate good players because everybody knows how to play, basically. I meet good players, players that are better than me, every day. It’s worrying (laughs).

At some point, if you want to make a difference, you need to make their weaknesses your strengths, and it can be tiny things. In the long run that’s what makes the difference.

Nicolas Proust 3484

But that’s not the only reason I won. It was my “one time” and I got lucky. Even if it doesn’t outshine what you’ve done before. I think luck doesn’t exist, it’s created.

The luckiest people are often the most “naive” ones, those who believe like children almost. Your frame of mind is important, and not just in poker.

PL: Do you already know what you will do with the money you’ve won?

NP: To be fair, I don’t think I’ll use much of it at all. I’m going to put aside most of it to cover myself. And then there are the taxes, so I’m going to have to let quite a bit of it go.

But what I know is that I don’t intend to waste it on useless things. My life isn’t going to change. I might invest in real estate.

I’m going to play more tournaments though. Not necessarily bigger ones, but $500 buy-ins or qualifiers.

PL: How long do you see yourself playing poker?

NP: As long as I keep making progress and I’m still interested, I’ll play. The day I start feeling that it’s not the case anymore, I’ll stop and I’ll go back to what I know best: tennis.

But for now this is still far, I still have a lot of goals and I’m really enjoying myself.

Proust1

PL: What are your other projects?

NP: Right now, moving to Malta and going on a trip at the beginning of the year - in Thailand - to celebrate my 30th with a friend.

It’s three weeks of proper holidays with no cards involved. After that I might go to Brazil to visit my best friend.

And then the PCA, but even if I can afford it I don’t know if it’s really reasonable. I’ll definitely try to qualify though.

PL: Why Nicolas “Maverick”? Is that a reference to the poker-playing character with the same name or to Top Gun?

NP: Neither of them really, I haven’t even seen them. I get that question quite often though (laughs).

It’s a screen name that describes my state of mind.

A maverick lives his life the way he wants, even if that means being on the fringes of society.

All of the top three finishers took home over €100,000 and the overall prize pool hit an enormous €874,940. And that number could certainly be surpassed in 2016.

The effervescent Maria Ho will return as host and the event will once again take place at the Portomaso Casino attached to the five-star Hilton Hotel.

The Battle of Malta has grown into a full-bore poker festival with a variety of side events, including a high roller and PLO tournament, and a series of VIP player parties.
